Further documentation of the phylogenetic position and parasitic habit of Brandisia Hook. f. and Thomson. Brandisia Hook.f. & Thomson is a genus of shrubs consisting of circa 11 species native to tropical E. Asia. The familial placement of Brandisia has been contentious; owing to an unusual assemblage of characters have resulted in placement in both Paulowniaceae and Scrophulariaceae sensu latu. It’s phylogenetic position within Orobanchaceae has been strongly supported in phylogenetic analyses including the single species B. hancei Hooker. f.. However, some uncertainty exists regarding this placement due to conflicting phylogenetic signal between plastid and nuclear data matrices. Although parasitism has been suggested for this genus, and is fully expected given the phylogenetic placement within Orobanchaceae, the mode of parasitism remains unexplored. In this study, we have expanded phylogenetic sampling of Brandisia to include three additional species, B. discolor Hook.f. & Thomson, B. kwangiensis H.L. Li, and B. racemosa Hemsl., using sequence data from nuclear ITS, PHYA , and PHYB, and plastid matK and rps2. We have characterized haustorial connections anatomically, and provide a comparison with other known haustorial types in Orobanchaceae.
