Juglandaceae Holdings of The Wayne E. Manning Herbarium at Bucknell University: Historical Significance and Future Potential .

Wayne Eyer Manning (1899 – 2004) was a renowned specialist on the plant family Juglandaceae and a professor at Bucknell University for 23 years. He received his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College and his Ph.D. in Botany at Cornell University. Over the course of his long career Dr. Manning published over 40 articles on the subject of Juglandaceae and established both a greenhouse and a herbarium at Bucknell, the latter of these now named for him. Although the Manning Herbarium (BUPL) is home to an impressive diversity of taxa its most notable holdings are the several hundred specimens in Manning’s own Juglandaceae collection. The Juglandaceae family is a relatively small but important family of wind pollinated trees that includes walnuts, pecans, and hickories. The family contains around 80 species across 9 genera. The Manning collection consists largely of hundreds of boxes of Juglandaceae fruits, labeled and organized, complemented with similar numbers of herbarium sheets. Among the collection are specimens representing all of the Juglandaceae genera from all of the places where they occur: North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Of the total species names currently accepted for inclusion in Juglandaceae, about 70% are held at BUPL – a number closer to 95% if calculated during the period when Manning was active. Current gaps in his collection are mostly recently described Chinese species in Engelhardia and Alfaroa, along with a small number of Carya hybrids. The collection could prove extremely useful to research on Juglandaceae fruit morphology. For the genera Carya and Juglans Manning’s collection is both broad and deep, with dozens if not hundreds of fruits from single species – in whole, in cross-section, in longitudinal-section, and with and without the husk. Comprehensive measurements of nut size across species, interior structure, within-species variability, and exterior qualities could be made.  Manning’s fruit and herbarium collections, plus his expansive records, are an outstanding resource for Juglandaceae research, but also provide a historical portal into mid-20^th century botanical science. The preservation of the Manning Juglandaceae holdings at Bucknell represents an outstanding example of the importance of maintaining and supporting small natural history collections.
