Effects of human induced stressor on water chemistry and phytoplankton composition of a tidal creek. Ito-Iwolo, one of the numerous creeks that emptied into the Lagos lagoon was investigated for twelve months (February 2010 - January 2011) in order to know the influence human induced stressors on the physico chemical parameters and phytoplankton composition. One hundred and twenty-five species belonging to fifty-four genera were recorded. Three divisions Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta were recorded. The diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) constituted the most abundant group making up sixty-eight species (54%) from twenty-eight genera. The green algae (Chlorophyceae) recorded forty species (32%) from seventeen genera and the blue green algae (Cyanophyceae), seventeen species (14%) from nine genera. Higher phytoplankton diversity and cell counts were recorded in the dry season (November – January) than in the wet season. Melosira, Diatoma. Cyclotella, Fragilaria Synedra and Closterium were more frequently occurring species. The highest value of surface water temperature (28.50ËšC) was recorded in December 2010 while the lowest (26.70ËšC) was recorded in August 2010. The nitrate-nitrogen content values ranged from 0.70mg/L to 3.10mg/L and community structure indices showed a diverse environment. Log in to add this item to your schedule
