Systematics Section/ASPT Krings, Alexander [1]. Digitizing the North Carolina State University Vascular Plant Herbarium (NCSC). For over 110 years, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) vascular plant herbarium (NCSC) has specialized in the flora of North Carolina and the southeastern United States. NCSC integrates the strengths of NCSU—teaching, research, extension, and engagement—through its mission: (1) To document and understand plant diversity, and (2) to transfer the taxonomic expertise developed to various users that depend on the generated knowledge. Documenting and understanding plant diversity is Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation [GSPC] (Convention for Biological Diversity) and a necessary prerequisite to assessing the conservation status of plant species—a precondition to meeting the GSPC goal of conserving 60% of the world’s threatened species in situ. However, it has become clear that documentation of the flora alone is insufficient unless specimen data is mobilized and easily accessible. Fortunately, with recent advances in technology, more and more collections are able to make available specimen data online for broadly ranging research applications, including grand challenge science. We here provide an update on our own digitization efforts in Year 2 of NSF CSBR support, including notes on our workflow, equipment, rates of barcoding and imaging, as well as progress to-date.
