Ecological Section Gilman, Ian [1], Jordon-Thaden, Ingrid [2], MARTINE , CHRISTOPHER T [3]. Vague species boundaries exposed: Reproductive biology of functionally dioecious sister taxa in Australian Solanum . Solanum asymmetriphyllum and S. sejunctum are functionally dioecious spiny solanums endemic to sandstone formations along the western escarpment of the Arnhem Plateau (Northern Territory, Australia). The species are regionally sympatric but do not overlap in space, with S. sejunctum mostly occupying a restricted range consisting of a single monolith. While the reproductive biology of S. asymmetriphyllum has been analyzed, with the species described as functionally dioecious based on pollen characters and crossing experiments, S. sejunctum has not previously been closely examined. Data garnered from procedures involving hundreds of greenhouse plants are here presented, along with comparisons between S. sejunctum. S. asymmetriphyllum, and other functionally dioecious solanums. Surprisingly, interspecific crosses performed between S. sejunctum and S. asymmetriphyllum led to nearly 100% fruit set. Measures of seed set and seed germination, plus the collection of an intermediate form in the wild, infer a recent divergence. Log in to add this item to your schedule
