Effect of foliar fertilization with liquid Nitrogen (N) and Benzyl amino purine (BAP) on senescence, nitrogen mobilization and yield in Cowpea varieties. The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of foliar application of liquid nitrogen fertilizer (N) and benzyl amino purine (BAP) on senescence, nitrogen mobilization and yield in cowpea. The experiment was carried out in the screen house at University of Lagos. The procedure involved foliar spraying of the plants with liquid nitrogen fertilizer (100ml in 15litres of water), BAP at 200ppm concentration and N+BAP at 3:1 ratio while the control plants were sprayed with water. The spraying was done at 3, 6, and 9 weeks after planting. The data was recorded as time taken in days from sowing to onset and progression of senescence and total death of plant. Measurements were also taken on rate of movement of N and protein from source to sink and also yield. The treatments particularly 200ppm BAP and N+BAP significantly delayed senescence with concomitant rise in chlorophyll level. The levels of nitrogen in the source decreased as the number of weeks after sowing increased but the rate of decline was higher in the control plants(0.70, 0.56, 0.35) followed by N treatment (0.83, 0.69,0.48) while it was slower in N+BAP and BAP treatments (0.90, 0.80,0.64) and (0.78,0.76, 0.60) for 6,9 and 12weeks after sowing respectively. Similar pattern was observed with respect to the rate of mobilization of protein. There were corresponding increases in N and protein levels in the sink at harvest due to the treatments with N+BAP treatments having highest concentration of N (4.36) and protein (27.27). Yield was significantly greater in the treated plants compared with the control. Two harvests were made in the treatments and only one in the control. The study shows that 200ppmBAP could delay senescence in cowpea as well as enhance the mobilization of N from source to sink. Both N fertilizer and BAP could induce two harvests as against one in the control. Log in to add this item to your schedule
