Towards a field guide to flowering plant families and genera of the world.

In the last 20 years increased molecular data has led to many changes in the plant classification system leading to confusion about familial and generic circumscriptions. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) has provided a stable phylogenetic framework at the family level and is now widely accepted but morphological characters associated with some families are still poorly known. At the generic level there is no up-to-date list of currently accepted genera based on molecular data. Recent technological advancements are enabling large amounts of botanical information to be carried and used in remote areas, as well as being available in places lacking botanical infrastructure or internet access. Using the latest e-technology this project presents a single source of information of useful morphological characters (i.e. for field or herbarium identification) of all currently recognised families and genera, for non-specialists and (non-expert) specialists alike. The first instalment of the project has provided family circumscriptions for all 413 recognised APG III plant families with keys, concise descriptions and images. In addition, lists of currently accepted genera, with morphological notes to aid delimitation, are provided for 398 of the APG III plant families. The usefulness of the project for American botanists and in a regional context will be emphasised and future plans outlined.
