Systematics Section/ASPT Straub, Shannon [1], CHEN, LUXI [2], Song, Yao-Bin [4], Li, Jumin [3], Dong, Ming [4], ASHMAN , TIA-LYNN RUTH [5], Liston, Aaron [6]. Plastid diversity and phylogeography of Chinese strawberries. With 13 of the 23 recognized strawberry species, the diversity of Fragaria (Rosaceae) in China exceeds any other region of the world. Eight of the species are diploid and five are tetraploid. Two diploids and four tetraploids are endemic to China, but species delimitation is uncertain. Furthermore, floristic treatments and monographs differ in their circumscription of the Northeast Asian F. orientalis and Eurasian F. vesca subsp. vesca, with many sources reporting these species from southwestern China. To better understand the taxonomy, and to gain insights into the distribution of genetic variation between ploidy levels, within populations, and across the landscape, we sequenced the ca. 1250 bp plastid ndhA intron in nearly 1800 individuals from 133 populations representing most of the geographic range of the genus in China. This intron was selected as highly variable in Fragaria based on a comparison of plastome sequences; preliminary results reflect this with 83 haplotypes shared by two or more individuals. Initial results 1) confirm the distinctiveness of two diploids, F. daltoniana and F. nilgerrensis; 2) indicate that F. orientalis and F. vesca subsp. vesca are  restricted to northeastern and northwestern China, respectively; and 3) reveal high levels of haplotype diversity within and among populations of the six endemic Fragaria species.
