Systematics Section/ASPT McDonnell, Angela [1], Fishbein, Mark [2]. Evolution and Systematics of American Milkweed Vines (Apocynaceae, Gonolobinae). Milkweed subtribe Gonolobinae is diverse (450 spp.) and apparently originated in the Neotropics, but has undergone significant radiation in the seasonally dry grasslands and savannas of subtropical and temperate North America, making it an ideal group for ecological and phylogenetic study of the origin of the temperate grassland flora. A useful classification and an understanding of evolution within the American milkweed vines have been evasive to botanists due to extensive floral variation within the group. To begin to address this problem, we use a combination of sequences from chloroplast markers and three cloned nuclear conserved orthologous set (COSII) loci to investigate the evolutionary relationships within the group. Reconstruction of a broadly-sampled (32 spp.) subtribe is presented. Special emphasis is placed on morphology, implications for classification, and Matelea subgenus Chthamalia.
