Conference Wide McPherson, Amy [1], MARTINE , CHRISTOPHER T [2]. Publishing in 2014: What Should Authors and Publishers Do? Join us for a discussion about what contemporary authors go through to publish and promote their own work—and what publishers and editors are doing on the “other side” to do the same. Today’s authors have more options of where and how to publish (online-only, print and online, Open Access, preprint repositories). They can use academic networking sites to self-post PDFs of articles and to track access to these articles. Other services easily provide new types of reputation metrics for individual scholars based on one’s personal citations. Along with increased author control, publishers are also looking for metrics beyond the Journal Impact Factor and are working to attract authors and build readership beyond traditional subscribers. At the same time, they’re evaluating and evolving peer-review processes, promoting authors’ work through traditional and non-traditional means, and worrying over faster publication, ethical concerns, and access to underlying data. What are authors' concerns and suggestions regarding publishing and publicizing their work in an ever-shifting landscape? What have traditional and new publishers done or need to do to address these concerns? And how are current authors taking best advantage of the myriad ways in which new findings can be shared and promoted? Bring your own questions and experiences to share to this open discussion.
