Systematics Section/ASPT Wofford, Austin [1], Willyard, Ann [2]. Integrated molecular and morphological analysis of the Pinus ponderosa species complex and related species of subsection Ponderosae. The large geographic distribution of Pinus ponderosa s.l. has been divided into regional groupings using molecular and ecological patterns of variation. Testing taxonomic hypotheses for operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within this species complex, as well as determining where these populations fit in the context of the subsection Ponderosae has been challenging. Presently, 17 species are accepted in the subsection with distributions across the western U.S., Mexico, and Central America. It has been suggested that lack of access to plant material across political borders has resulted in an incomplete picture of their taxonomic relationships. We added plastid and mitochondrial data for Mexican and Central American Ponderosae species and scored 20 morphological and anatomical characters in herbarium specimens of subsection Ponderosae. To account for independent patterns of variation revealed by plastid, mitochondrial, nuclear, and morphological data, we used discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) which allows the combination of data from diverse sources. We discuss the effectiveness of combining these independent data sets and the intra- and inter-specific clusters found in the P. ponderosa species complex and related Ponderosae.
