Laurinoxylon from the Miocene Chalatenango Formation, El Salvador. The fossil record of vascular plants in Central America is sparse and mostly restricted to palynological reports. It is, however, important to understand how the flora of the region was build up and the form and timing of arrival, as well as the source of the plants that composed its vegetation today. Fossil plants have been long known from Miocene sediment in El Salvador, but their study will begin with this contribution. The material was collected in rocks of the Chalatenango Formation, specifically in its sub-member ch2, which consists of acid effusive rocks, isolated rhyolite mixed with ignimbrites in a geographic zone that corresponds with Concepción Quezaltepeque, Santa Rita, Comalapa, Dulce Nombre de MarÃa and an área north of El ParaÃso in North-Eastern El Salvador. These geologic unit and its fossils were first mapped and mentioned by a group of German geologists that in 1967 were in charge of generating the first complete geologic map of the country. The age of the rocks containing the fossil woods according with this work is Late Oligocene/Early Miocene, ca. 26 a 23 my. The wood characteristics include indistinct growth rings, diffuse porous; vessel elements solitary and in multiple radials of 2 - 4, occasionally larger, simple perforation plate, alternate intervascular pits, large eliptical vessel element-ray pits with reduced borders, non septate thin-walled fibers, 1-4 seriate heterocelular rays, axial parenchyma scanty paratracheal, oil cells associated with rays. These anatomical characters resemble the secondary xylem structure of Lauraceae, especially Laurinoxylon, but its comparison with the species so far described suggest that it represents a new species.
