Evolution of the seed morphology and staminode colour in the perennial taxa of Delphinium (Ranunculaceae) and a re-evaluation of their taxonomic applicability: Evidence from chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequence data. Delphinium L., consisting of 300-400 species, is one of the largest genera in the Ranunculaceae and widely distributed in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Owing to the high morphological variability and the large number of species in the genus, its infrageneric division is very difficult and remains highly controversial. This situation is reflected particularly in the perennial species, which constitute the largest part of the genus. The staminode colour (black vs. blue) and the seed morphology (seeds winged along angles vs. squamulose winged) have been previously used for the grouping of the perennials, but these characters are not correlated to each other, allowing four different character combinations to be made. Consequently, the infrageneric classiï¬cations proposed by different authors based on different character combinations are often in serious conflict. Here we present a molecular analysis to gain a better understanding of the evolution of the seed morphology and staminode colour in Delphinium and to re-evaluate their taxonomic applicability.
