Systematics Section/ASPT Douglas, Connor [1], Willyard, Ann [1]. Phylogeography of Pinus ponderosa based on molecular genetics and species distribution modeling. The combination of molecular data and species distribution models (SDMs) can be very useful for inferring phylogeographic relationships. We used samples of Pinus ponderosa across its entire geographic distribution and samples of related Mexican taxa to reveal plastid and mitochondrial genetic patterns. Based on operational taxonomic units (OTUs), operational definitions of putative species or subspecific taxa, we built an SDM of the present conditions for each one using climate data for 19 uncorrelated and biologically informative variables to determine each OTU’s realized ecological niche. By applying these known environmental conditions to data reconstructed for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), we modeled the hypothesized SDM during the LGM. This allowed us to infer past events such as the location of refugia and migration routes that could produce the contemporary geographical distribution of these P. ponderosa populations.
