Resolving the evolutionary history of the riverweeds (Podostemaceae). We present an updated phylogeny of the riverweed family (Podostemaceae, Malpighiales). Podostemaceae is the largest strictly aquatic flowering plant family. Their distribution is cosmopolitan in the tropics, though a few species occur in temperate regions, including one species native to the eastern United States. Recent field collecting efforts and laboratory work have allowed us to include unsampled Neotropical species in phylogenetic analyses and to add additional molecular markers for species included in prior studies. Using a maximum likelihood approach, we analyzed newly collected plastid data (matK, ndhF, rbcL, trnL) combined with previously published plastid, mitochondrial, and nuclear data to further resolve relationships in the family. Taxon sampling and resolution within the clade are greatly improved compared to previous studies and provide a strong basis for improving the classification of the family, which will directly aid conservation efforts. Rhyncholacis is not monophyletic, the monotypic genus Macarenia is embedded within it. Additionally, Podostemum is not monophyletic. Podostemum flagelliforme, previously recognized as the monotypic genus Devillea, is an early diverging lineage within subfamily Podostemoideae. Finally, the Neotropical genus Cipoia is embedded within the primarily Paleotropical clade of Podostemoideae.
