Systematics Section/ASPT Everett, Amanda [1]. Revisiting the Phylogenetic Systematics of Pogogyne using single-copy nuclear markers and NGS genome skimming data. Pogogyne is a genus of seven currently described and extant annuals, six of which are known endemics to vernal pool habitats. The unique selective pressures of the vernal pool ecosystem make Pogogyne a unique and interesting study group. This study will build on a previous systematic study by Silviera and Simpson (2013) by using additional molecular regions to enhance phylogenetic resolution within the genus. With this research we will also seek to answer additional questions about relationships within the paraphyletic species P. douglasii, polyphyly and species delimitation within the subgenus Hedeomoides, and status of a putative new species in Baja California, Mexico. Phylogenetic data will come from the entire plastome and ribosomal cistron, and selected unlinked single copy nuclear loci through genome skimming and PCR amplification of novel exon-primed, intron-crossing (EPIC) markers developed for the nearby genus Micromeria. Three species of Pogogyne are endangered making this systematic study of value to conservation. The use of exon-primed, intron-crossing markers will inform future researchers of their utility within the sub-tribe Mentheae. Log in to add this item to your schedule
