Systematics Section/ASPT Columbus, J. Travis [1], FISHER, Amanda [2], Freund, Forrest [1], Ingram, Amanda L. [3]. Origin of the Centropodia clade (Poaceae). The Centropodia clade comprises six grass species in two genera, Centropodia (4 spp., Africa and Asia) and Ellisochloa (2 spp., southern Africa), which undergo C4 and C3 photosynthesis, respectively. Based on morphology, these species have historically been classified in subfamily Danthonioideae, the two Ellisochloa species as species of Merxmuellera. However, phylogenetic analyses of plastid sequences not only yield a Centropodia-Ellisochloa sister relationship, but also resolve the Centropodia clade as the sister of subfamily Chloridoideae, and these clades in turn are sister to Danthonioideae. We studied the morphology (including lemma and leaf blade micromorphology) and leaf blade anatomy of species in the Centropodia clade and made comparisons to members of Chloridoideae and Danthonioideae. To further investigate the phylogenetic history of the Centropodia clade (i.e., beyond the plastid phylogeny) we used hyb-seq targeted-enrichment next-generation sequencing to recover numerous nuclear loci from representatives of the Centropodia clade and all PACMAD subfamilies. We used these data along with the plastid phylogeny to explore the possibility that the Centropodia clade may be of inter-subfamilial hybrid origin. Log in to add this item to your schedule
