Systematics Section/ASPT FLODEN, AARON [1]. Phylogenetics of Heteropolygonatum and Polygonatum (Asparagaceae). Heteropolygonatum and Polygonatum (Asparagaceae) are considered sister genera delimited by the presence of imbricate tepals and a haploid chromosome number of 16 in the former whereas Polygonatum have a valvate perianth and a haploid range of 9-15. Polygonatum is circumboreal in distribution with its highest diversity in eastern Asia. Heteropolygonatum is currently reported as a genus endemic to China. A limited number of phylogenetic analyses have utilized limited sampling of taxa and loci and have not strongly supported the monophyly of Heteropolygonatum. Secondly, the infrageneric classifications of Polygonatum based on multiple characters, i.e. haploid chromosome number, phyllotaxy, and filament morphology, have not been strongly supported which resulted in a reduced infrageneric , but less homogeneous classification. I present genomic data of the chloroplast and nDNA (ITS) that supports the monophyly of each and also support the recognition of several additional species in Heteropolygonatum which expands the distribution of the genus to outside China. These data, based on selective sampling from previous infrageneric schemes, clarify the relationships within Polygonatum. Furthermore, an increased taxa and reduced loci sampling reveal that the species level diversity within Polygonatum has been highly underestimated in several species groups.
