Pteridological Section/AFS Pryer, Kathleen M [1], Huiet, Layne [1], Schuettpelz, Eric [2]. Exploring the evolution of an extreme makeover in ferns. The “maidenhair ferns” (Adiantum) are quintessential ferns––beautifully dissected, terrestrial, and shade-loving. The closely related “shoe-string ferns” (vittarioids) are highly simplified, canopy-dwelling epiphytes exhibiting genome duplication and accelerated rates of molecular evolution. While Adiantum and the vittarioids together compose a robust monophyletic group, there are unanswered questions regarding the monophyly of Adiantum and the evolutionary history of the vittarioids. Here, we review recent evidence that supports the monophyly of Adiantum and discuss how a robust phylogenetic framework allows us to explore the evolution of an extreme morphological, ecological, and genomic makeover in ferns.
