Biogeography of Asian Begonia (BEGONIACEAE) with an emphasis on the continental species.

Begonia (Begoniaceae) is the 6th largest plant genus, with estimated 1,600 species occurring throughout tropical and subtropical America, Africa, and Asia. Previous studies suggest Asian Begonia (ca. 600 sp.) originates from Africa, migrated eastward through India to other areas of Asia, and diversified in Malesian Archipelago and Continental Asia respectively. To understand how Begonia migrated from India to Malesian Archipelago and Continental Asia,  we use chloroplast DNA sequence (psbM-trnD spacer, rpL16 intron, trnC-ycf6 spacer, trnL-trnF spacer, and ycf6-psbM spacer), covering all seven major sections of Asian Begonia (Baryandra, Coelocentrum, Diploclinium, Petermmania, Platycentrum, Reichenheimia and Sphenanthera) from China, Himalayas (Bhutan, Nepal and NE India), India, Indo-china (Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam), Malesian Archipelago and Taiwan, to reconstruct calibrating phylogeny and ancestral areas. The results suggested that except the four species from southern and central India, a majority of Asian Begonia species fall into two monophyletic groups: the Malesian group and the continental group. The malesian group migrated through Indochina to Peninsular Malaysia and subsequently to Malesian Archipelago. The continental group migrated through Himalayas and China to Indochina and Peninsula Malaysia, after that, returned to China and Himalayas. This indicates a complicate migration history of Begonia has occurred between China, Himalayas, Indochina and Malesian Archipelago areas.
