InsideWood. Ten Years of A Wood Anatomy Web Site.

InsideWood is an Internet-accessible wood anatomy reference, research, and teaching tool hosted by the N.C. State University library that has been available since 2004. The InsideWood database has descriptions of present-day (> 7,000 species) and fossil  (>1,700 types)  woods based on the feature codes of the IAWA List of Microscopic Features for Hardwood Identification. An invaluable part of InsideWood is the digital image collection, which has grown to include over 42,000 photomicrographs, with recent additions of images of CITES-listed timber species and 400 species of Malagasy woods, these last donated by Pierre Détienne. This web site has value in helping with wood identification because it has a multiple entry key that allows searching by presence or absence of IAWA features. Also associated with the web site are links to instructional materials on wood anatomy. Apparently the web site is most used by archaeologists and museum conservators and well used outside of the US. This web site provides data on the wood anatomical characteristics of families and genera and the distribution of functional traits such as vessel diameter and frequency and porosity type. For courses devoted to or including a section on plant anatomy, InsideWood is a useful resource for teaching wood anatomy, allowing comparison of woods adapted to different environments and woods of different families and genera.
