Teaching Section Srimake, Yawadee [1]. Promote native plants in classroom: Can we use them more in Landscape? Native plants are essential to Hawai'i's unique ecosystem, culture and history. Many of them require less water, maintenance, fertilizer and also create an exotic tropical look. However, they have not been widely used, in many cases, because of lacking growing information. Adding native plants to landscape helps promote sustainable practices and awareness in environmental conservation. Students in Ornamental Plant Materials class were given a project, designing and conducting an experiment to evaluate non-endanger native plants for their usages in landscape. The objective was to use simple experiment to study growth habits or to identify a proper propagation method. At the completion of the class, students are able to select and incorporate native plants to the landscape according to their growing requirements.
