Tree Tag Lagos: DNA Banking of Trees in Lagos.

Today, many tree species face extinction or severe genetic loss and for most of the endangered species, little effort is being made for their conservation. The aim of this research is to carry out exploration of the tree species in Lagos and conserve all the available varieties using DNA technologies. In order to achieve this, fresh plant samples were collected from all the Local Government Areas in Lagos, identified, preserved and voucher specimens were deposited at the University of Lagos Herbarium. Some of the samples were also preserved in silica gel for DNA extraction purpose. The extracted DNA samples were purified; size separated by gel electrophoresis and quantified using spectrophotometer. At the end of this study, different sizes of DNA samples were obtained and photographed using a UV documentation machine and a Polaroid film. Also, DNA samples generated were deposited at the University of Lagos DNA Bank for easy access by researchers and students.
