Conference Wide Mickle, James [1]. Developing a Hands-on Distance Education Botany Lab Course. This workshop focuses on the process of generating a distance education (DE) version of an introductory botany course that includes a hands-on DE lab. Course instructor James Mickle will share his experiences of working collaboratively with NCSU instructional designers and co-instructor Chad Jordan to develop lecture modules and labs that effectively address the same learning outcomes as an on-campus course. He will also discuss the series of labs that were modified from the on-campus course to be safely carried out in the home environment using a combination of materials supplied in a lab kit and low-cost items that can be found at home or in a grocery. The presentation will feature examples of novel learning objects developed by NCSU's multimedia specialists for both the lecture and lab components of the course, including a novel animation on plant secondary growth, digital flashcards, a slide virtual viewer, and online videos. Demonstrations of and hands-on lab activites will be included. Log in to add this item to your schedule
