Taxonomic Value of Vegetable Yield Attributes of the Genus Basella occuring in South western, Nigeria.

The Genus Basella was described as a monotypic, B. alba syn rubra in the Flora of West Tropical Africa (FWTA). However different forms  of the genus exist that are different from the description; B. alba, B. rubra and B. cordifolia. The study seeks for additional characters that are useful for delimiting the forms. Vegetable yield attributes were determined using thirteen parameters such as above ground height, length and breadth of leaves, number of leaves per plant , number of branches per plant etc. Statistical analysis were doned on the parameters measured. Significant differences occurred in the parameters measured. Single linkage cluster analysis showed  that the Basella forms are clusterd in two main clusters. The study also revealed that Vegetable yied attributes are useful in delimiting the members of the genus occuring in the study area  and an additional evidence that the genus is not monotypic as described in the Flora.
