Digitized natural history collections records in traditional research, collaborative research, and big data research

Ecological and taxonomic examination of Florida Cladonia using the Consortium of North American Lichen Herbaria portal.

The digitization of approximately 2 million records of lichens and bryophytes on the Consortium of North American Lichen and Bryophyte Portals (CNALH and CNABH) presents a wealth of data, that can enhance basic taxonomic and ecological information of large genera. One example is the lichen genus Cladonia. In this presentation, CNALH data and additional collection databases were combined to examine Cladonia species diversity in Florida and substrate preference. Forty-two taxa are present in Florida (39 species, 2 varieties and 1 form). For 32 of the most common species, substrate preference was compiled using CNALH data and other sources. The three major substrate categories used were 1) wood/bark, 2) sand and 3) soil/organic matter. Ten species were substrate specific (6 on wood and 4 on sand) and four species were generalists. Combined with other key characteristics (apothecia color, branching, and additional unique features) substrate information has the potential to enhance interactive digital identification keys. To demonstrate this potential, a digital key for Cladonia in Florida will be presented using the Symbiota (CNALH) portal.
