The importance of being the first: Oenothera sect. Gaura as a case study in defining primary pollination systems.

In this study we found that 7 of the 25 Oenothera species in section Gaura exhibit a dual pollination system that consists of both day and night pollinators. The use of day pollinators by traditionally night pollinated species can provide a form of reproductive assurance. Using both visitation rate and average pollen load, we found that up to 95% of the pollen flow was accounted for by day pollinators in these species. However, these species exhibit floral traits and phenology consistent with adaptations for night pollination. For each of these Oenothera species, we examined the role of both day and night pollinators, conducted an analysis of the timing and success of pollen tubes formed, and determined the primary pollinator functional groups. Our results show that although day pollinators, primarily bees, function as a secondary pollinator, the night pollinators, primarily noctuid moths were responsible for the successful seed set in these Oenothera species. While true dual pollination systems exist in other Oenothera, for Oenothera sect. Gaura, the current pollination systems are consistent with the floral traits associated with night pollination.
