Stepping Out of the Tower: Careers Beyond the Academy.

Graduate student preparation for non-academic careers has been recognized in numerous recent reports as an important step in developing and maintaining a world-class STEM workforce within the United States (Council of Graduate Schools 2012, NIH 2012, American Chemical Society 2012, National Research Council 2012). Additionally, there is a growing disparity between the number of Ph.D.’s awarded and the number of tenure-track positions available each year. In response to these issues, we have organized a panel of botanists working in diverse science sectors (e.g., industry, government, non-profit, etc) who will discuss careers outside of academia and answer participants’ questions. This session will be an open discussion between panelists and audience members, facilitated by a moderator, designed to address opportunities in the post-graduate job market. All panelists have botanical graduate degrees and the panel discussion will be of interest to all participating societies at Botany 2014.
