Herbarium Link: barcode association, deep zoom, and EOL taxonomy.

Herbarium Link includes three finished components that speed workflow and make the CSU Herbarium’s database more accessible to online users.  First, Herbarium Link associates barcodes with imaged specimens, without requiring that the barcode be re-scanned after the specimen is imaged.  The current error rate, wherein no association is recognized, is 6%.  Second, from each 20-megapixel specimen image, Herbarium Link creates thumbnail and medium-size renditions as well as 460 tiles for use by OpenSeadragon to enable continuous deep zoom while minimizing upload time.  Third, Herbarium Link checks each specimen’s assigned taxonomic name against the Encyclopedia of Life reference database and generates a list of conflicts for the database administrator to resolve.  Herbarium Link also associates the common names and synonyms recognized by the Encyclopedia of Life with that taxon so that online users may successfully use those terms in their searches of the CSU Herbarium’s database.   Herbarium Link may be readily modified to work with other databases and the source code is freely available at: http://herbarium.biology.colostate.edu/svn/
