Genetics Section Wedger, Marshall [1], Gross, Briana [2]. Identification of unknown apple (Malus x domestica) varieties in the duluth region using DNA simple sequence repeats. Authors: Marshall Wedger and Briana L. Gross Domesticated apple (Malus x domestica) is a major perennial crop throughout temperate North America, with commercial orchards producing thousands of pounds of fruit, and many more abandoned trees in backyards and old homesteads. Little is known about the history and genetic make-up of these trees, but such information could be exceptionally useful for renewing local production and as a component of larger breeding programs. In this study, we worked with Duluth, MN community members and orchards to genetically identify 276 apple trees using nine SSRs. We identified 71 trees as matches to 17 named cultivars, and 46 more apples encompassing 16 unknown genotypes. We found a significant overabundance of the ‘Haralson’ cultivar, representing more than 15% of the collected samples (p<<0.005). These findings provide unique insight into the genetic structure of a clonal crop on a local scale, and will be used in efforts to restore apple production in Duluth and along the North shore of Lake Superior.
