Phylogeny of Senegalia Raf. (Leguminosae- Mimosoideae) species in Brazil.

Senegalia Raf. is a genus characterized by bipinnate leaves, presence of petiolar nectaries, prickles on the branches and pollen grains arranged in polyads with 16 grains. Senegalia has a pantropical distributon with centers of richness in Brazil, Mexico and Africa.  Morphology is an important tool in taxonomy but it is not sufficient to solve the taxonomic issues and elucidate the evolutionary history of this genus. Prior molecular analyses of Mimosoideae have lacked breadth of sampling within Senegalia, leaving relationships uncertain. The aim of this study was to test the monophyly of Brazilian species, investigate the relationship of these species with non-Brazilian Senegalia and investigate the morphological character evolution of Senegalia. We sequenced four plastid and one nuclear DNA (ITS) regions for 160 samples of 66 Senegalia species. The Brazilian species of Senegalia are not a monophyletic group as well the African species. Mexican species form a clade sister to the Brazilian/African. The authors wish to thank the financial support granted by Capes, CNPq, Fapemig, Fapesb, CSIRO and PPG-Botânica-UFV.
