Chromosome numbers of vascular plants from the Korean peninsula (1).

We have conducted chromosomal study in order to confirm the diversity of chromosome numbers from Korean plants and resolve insufficient information in the chromosomal data. The somatic chromosome numbers of 47 taxa of 27 families collected in Korea. The chromosome counts of 40 species are confirmed and 22 species are investigated here at first from Korean populations. In addition, the chromosome numbers of seven species are discovered here for the first time: Oxalis obtriangulata Maxim. (2n = 18), Caryopteris divaricata (Siebold & Zucc.) Maxim. (2n = 28), Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum Makino (2n = 54), Elaeagnus macrophylla Thunb. (2n = 28), Viburnum japonicum (Thunb.) Sprengel (2n = 18), Asarum patens (K.Yamaki) B.U.Oh (2n = 26), and Amsonia elliptica (Thunb.) Roem. & Schult. (2n = 22). Multiple levels of ploidy are found in Atriplex gmelinii C.A.Mey (2n = 5x = 45) and Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino (2n = 3x = 33). We also identified 2n = 22, 33, 44, and 66 in G. pentaphyllum although previously published as 2n = 22, 24, 44, and 64. In several taxa, conflicting counts to previous reports are found in Commelina communis L. (2n = 86), Patrinia rupestris (Pall.) Juss. (2n = 20), Nandina domestica Thunb. (2n = 16), Justicia procumbens L. (2n = 34) and Plantago camtschatica Cham. ex Link (2n = 10). Especially, the chromosome number in C. communis ranges from 2n = 16 to 2n = 90 with diverse levels of polyploidy and aneuploidy, and our result supports oxtaploidy. The relationship between chromosomal and morphological diversity will be discussed. We expect that this cytological study can be utilized to apprehend the floristic diversity of the Korean peninsula.
